State Bird Of Mississippi

The State of Mississippi gets its name from the river that flows along its its western border. This river was named by Native Americans as Great River or Great Water.
When the first written records were made, the name of the river was spelled Malabouchia or Muchee Supee.
Spellings was changed over time from Mitchisipi, Misisipi, Micissippi, Missisippi and finally Mississippi.
Nickname: The Magnolia State
Capital city of Mississippi: Jackson
Largest city in Mississippi: Jackson

In 1872, Mississippi was known as the Mudcat State, after a large catfish that lived in the river mud (a similar allusion may also have given it the less common nickname the Mud-Waddler State) . Bayou State dates from around 1867, and Eagle State is possibly a shortening of Border-Eagle State, which first appeared around 1846, and both may be from the eagle that appears on the state's seal. The state is also sometimes known as the Groundhog State or the Hospitality State .However, the abundance of the magnolia, and its adoption as the official state flower and tree, has led to the modern nickname of the Magnolia State
